Nongstoiñ: Interstate border with Assam a ‘thorn in the flesh’.
From time to time the public along the interstate border suffer from the interference either by Assam border residents or by its police personnels.
Yesterday, again such incident is witnessed at Ranighat in which Assam police personnels arrived in areas of Athiabari West Khasi Hills District to forcibly stall the construction of the road under PMGSY scheme from Athiabari to Umshek having the length of 6.2 KM. This action by Assam police provoked the villagers of Ranighat, to the point of even giving a retaliation had not the Meghalaya police arrived and take control of the situation.
Reliable sources informed that Assam police seized one ML- 06- 8426 Dumper Truck and arrested the driver Dambingstar Lyngkhoi.
Speaking over phone Superintendent of Police West Khasi Hills District Bah BJ Laloo said that there are some areas that are disputed between Assam and Meghalaya and informed that the driver was released on the same day while the Dumper is still detained until proper vehicle documents is produced. The situation returns to normalcy he informed.
Local MDC of Rambrai Jyrngam Constituency Bah Bajop Pynrope express shock and regret over the incident. Further, the MDC express his gratitude to the SP West Khasi Hills, for his prompt intervention and request protection from the Home Police Department to facilitate development works throughout Jyrngam Constituency. He also urged the MDA government to fast track the solution to the problem with Assam so that people in the area will not be harassed anymore.
The MDC promised to spot check by himself to the place of the incident to get firsthand information from the people.
FKJGP Mawshynrut Circle through the General Secretary bah C. Kharmutee condemn the incident and demand that the MDA government take up the matter with its counterpart at the earliest.
