Shillong: Today the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Narpuh Circle under the leadership of K.S Suchiang President, S. Bamon General Secretary, with the land owners from Huroi whose cultivable lands were badly affected by the road construction and barb wire fencing along the Indo-Bangla Border by the National Border Construction Company (NBCC), met the Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia hills, on the rejection by the company to compensate them.
In the meeting today, the DC said that the compensation has been paid to the land owners right from 2012. So, he said that the company can’t’ pay twice. He also warned them that they have no right to obstruct and stop the work, but if they stop and obstruct he will send the Army to intervene.
The land owners were kept in the dark as they plead ignorance that such payment or compensation has ever taken place. They asserted that in no way have they received even a single paise and wonder where and how such transaction was carried out!
At the same time the KSU also handed a letter of opposition against the public hearing for the Star Cement’s plan of expanding the limestone quarry at Brichyrnot. The letter was addressed to the Member Secretary Meghalaya State Pollution Board. On the objection by the KSU, the DC said the public hearing will go on as scheduled but whether the issue will be accepted or rejected it is up to the wisdom of the public.
