Nongstoiñ: Voice of protest rising against the setting up of Coal Coke Plants in areas of Shallang, West Khasi Hills District. Besides the JAC, a conglomeration of eight NGOs, now it is the contingent of Village leaders of all the eight villages who opposed the Plant to the DC of West Khasi Hills District.
The eight villages are Doranggre, Khymering, Mawbon Agal, Songsak, Mabon Chittu, Nengchigre, Mawbon Riangna and Nadonme.
Their great concern is that such Plants will destroy the environment and pollute the air which will in turn affect the agricultural livelihood of the people nearby. Coal distillation through coking Plants disseminate chemical waste that will pollute rivers and black smoke that will pollute the air.
These leaders will ask the DC to shift these Plants to an area far from inhabited and cultivated lands.
I saw with my naked eyes that 2 /3 factory are working now and still more and more factory’s are still building now and the smoke that came out from factory is really very bad for health and there is one pond on the way between umdang village and nongdaju village particularly named riangniong and the fish that live in that pond were dying now …this could never been happened from before until that factory’s exist in shallang area …this show that the owner of that factory does not have future plann to save the environment and affection of the people who live in that area and they focus only for their personal gain (money) .
