Shillong: Jitul Deka, has petition to the National Green Tribunal, in New Delhi, on the illegal mining of stone in Ri Bhoi District.

Deka in his petition raises the issue of mass mining of stones at Khanapara of Ri Bhoi District that cause environmental hazards in many ways. He states that such illegal mining activities are going on under deemed forest which would require clearance under Forest Conservation Act 1984. It is found also that the illegal mining of stone is nearer to the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary and it needs the clearance of the National Board for Wildlife.
The NGT will sit in its next hearing on the 11 Oct. 2019 but at the same time, it has set up a committee that will be headed by the Deputy Commissioner, Nongpoh for early inspection to stop illegal mining.
