Shillong: A meeting of all the MDCs of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) ruling and opposition was held yesterday to discuss on the issue of Sixth Schedule Amendment.
Approving the decision of the Executive Committee the meeting took a unanimous decision n to send suggestion to the government in relation to the proposed Khasi Hills Autonomous Territorial Council (KHATC) in the following areas: 1) To have 31 MDCs in all, 29 by election and 2 by nomination in which of the two, one should be a woman. 2) To remove/delete the term “unrepresented tribes” from the Presidential Order. 3)
The Chief Executive Member (CEM) bah Teinwel Dkhar informs this after the meeting is over. He said, “The meeting today approved the proposal of the EC to the state government that the size of the Council will be 29 + 2”
Meanwhile the chairman KHADC bah Pynshngain N Syiem adds further clarification on the basis of the decision saying that limiting the size is in the interest of the Council to cut short the expenditure. Citing examples from the cash crunch ADCs in Garo and Jaintia Hills the chairman said “we have to be farsighted in this regard in order not to be a burden.”
In relation to the nominated ones, “it is left to the wisdom of the Governor” he said. In relation to the participation of the other groups in the Council election, the CEM along with bah Pynshngain, and bah Paul Lyngdoh maintained that the rule 128 ka AD Rule modified by the former H. S. Shylla led Council is standing.
