
Shillong: Bah Himalaya Shangpliang, MLA of Mawsynram Constituency yesterday visited Iewduh to get first hand information on the plight of farmers selling their produce.
As expected, he’s welcome by them who shared their ordeal with the legislator. Considering himself lucky, bah Aibok Kharsahnoh a farmer of Thangsning shared that a kilogram deduction is a matter of daily affair till now. For every ten kgs a kilogram is deducted. Another by name Bah Har Basalormaw of Umsning grieved openly for the cut of fertilizers supply from government office so farmers felt handicapped to meet the needs of their plants. Bah Shot Kharjana of Umlyngka shared that the cost price of 1 kg tomato is 20 rupees whereas the selling price is just between 22 and 30 rupees. Seeds supply from the government is decreasing from time to time.
Others shared their problems due to unhygienic and congested situation of the market place of Iewduh. When space is limited, it could not house enough when farmers are in a season of bringing in big supply of their produce to market.
The MLA assured farmers to take up their concerns to the Assembly even though Agriculture Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh already paid a visit earlier. In relation to cleanliness of the market he pointed to the responsibility the Hima Mylliem has as well as the public who came as sellers and buyers.
