Shillong:Four NEEPCO’s employees lost their precious lives when an ill-fated Umrangsu Dam bursts this morning at 6:30AM.
Of the four departed souls, two are junior engineers while the other two are cleaners. North Eastern Electric and Power Corporation (NEEPCO) sought help from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) as well as from Assam Rifles to help contain the problem of flooding triggered by this sudden burst of its giant pipe.
The water gushed out of the pipe was forceful upto 14 thousand litres per second with a very high undercurrent causing ferocious fountains above surface level.
The first to suffer casualty are the areas of Umrangsu surrounding this dam and its low lying areas.
NEEPCO’s Kupli project is a 275 MW Hydel Power, one of the major power supply in Assam established in 1976.
