Shillong: Geological Survey of India (GSI) clarifies that the survey carried out on 20th of this month at 3.30 PM in areas of Mawiawtep, Rambrai, West Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya is meant for Bauxite not Uranium.
It may be recalled that last Friday the 20th of September 2019 geologists Sushant Layek, Sr. Geologist, Suhrit Pramanik, Sr. Geologist and B. Lyngdoh, Sr. Surveyor of Geological Survey of India, Northeastern Region (GSI NER) along with the driver were on a survey at this place when they were brutally attacked and seriously injured by four unidentified men. The injured were rushed to hospital at Nongstoin then to Shillong.
Simultaneously, their Armada was burnt and mobiles snatched.
Sources said that the survey was conducted with prior permission from the Syiem, village and District authority. The GSI also reiterated that from time to time survey is carried out to find mineral deposits but not uranium and other radioactive ones.
Therefore, the GSI through its Public Relations Officer North Eastern Region, demands that the culprits be nabbed immediately and also informed that survey work is now put on hold after this incident due to the danger for the safety of the surveyors doing their work in the field..
