Shillong:Shri Balkarin Ch. Marak social activist, who also happen to be the Co-Chairman of Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC), has filed a PIL in the hon’ble High Court of Meghalaya against the illegal stone extraction falling under the jurisdiction of Garo Hills. The PIL was filed, after obtaining RTI report from the Meghalaya Forest and Environment Department.
Shri Balkarin, in a statement issued today said that besides rampant tree felling and illegal coal extraction, illegal stone mining are going on in entire Garo Hills, of which hundreds of stone-loaded trucks are seen exporting to Bangladesh on regular basis and also alleged that the state Govt. has given a free hand to mafias to extract mountain of stone in unscientific ways, that too without monitoring and reclamation and he also alleged that the incompetency of the Forest department to check illegal unscientific rampant ecological destruction have its effect in all stretches of Garo Hills, even in Simsang river, Rongmachok river, Bugi river, Sangkni river, Dadeng river, where in Williamnagar, Phulbari, Chokpot, Dadeng, Zekabari, Manggapara, Jongkipara, Bollonggre, Matchokchiring, Damjongre, Sabraguri, Matcha Nokpante, Galamatgre, Walkamgre, Rangdighopa, Rochonpara, Pipulbari, Jeldopara, Manrugre, Dhalasil, Tangaon, Morashali, Makrikula, Bantimari Jewali, stone extraction is being done from sedimentary riverbed.
“Locals from Rongkem village in Samanda Warima had claimed that due to stone extraction from the Simsang river and others river fishes have disappeared from peri-area, where the fishes were usually abound. To be more shocking and dismay was that this particular stone quarry was inaugurated by none other than Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma who always talk of environment” said Shri Balkarin in a statement issued today.
According to him, the tall promises of the present government are being rendered useless, perhaps deceitful in manner when on the one hand says and launch program like ‘One Citizen One Tree, Shillongmypassion, Meghalaya Plastic Challenge etc’ and on the other hand they are allowing stone quarrying and ecology destruction free hand. He pointed out that MDA Govt. is responsible for the present environmental destruction, as taking no action is a vindication of its incompetency and failure.
