Shillong: The KHADC is seen to work very hard to spearhead the “say no to plastic” movement at least beginning from its backyard the Iewduh (Burra Bazar). To take into confidence each buyer and seller who use this heritage market the Council along with the Hima Mylliem today organized a public meeting in which the Council In charge of Trade Bah Paul Lyngdoh officially declared Iewduh a no plastic zone with effect from today.
Speaking in the meeting Bah Paul said “This prohibition order not to use plastic anymore is meant for clean air and clean environment which will be good for everybody.”
He added, “the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi on 2nd October, that is exactly after one month will formally announce the ban of plastic all over the country. Therefore, this is the right time and initiative on the part of the Council and the Hima Mylliem to start this movement ahead of the announcement by the Prime Minister”.
The EM stressed that even the advanced countries nowadays find it a great challenge to deal with the problem of plastic waste as it creates numerous hazards on the environment as well as on human lives.
As per the Environment Protection Act 1986 the violation of this order will lead to a huge penalty of one lakh rupees but the District Council will not be pleased to encounter such unpleasant action. Therefore, as a way of preparing the public for a full cooperation with this order this public meeting is organized. Thus the public are urged to fully cooperate for the welfare of all..
To see that this order is smoothly implanted the three officers from the KHADC and three from the Hima Mylliem are appointed for the task.
Bah Jambor War EM in charge of markets and haats also gave a speech. In his speech he reiterated that what the Council resolved to do now is not new for there are already rules and regulations with legal implications in relation to this.
Also Pa,iem Ainam Syiem actingSyiem of Hima Mylliem said that on the part of the Hima Mylliem recently it has issued permission to only use plastic having 50 Micron. But the same stands valid only till the 31st of August 2019 he clarified. from today, he said the ban of plastic is fully active.
