Shillong: The state government is determined to reconduct the public hearing on the 30th of this month for the Star Cement’s Mining extension plan in Brichyrnot, Jaintia Hills. This erupted public opposition once again.
Three bodies of pressure groups in the area have already voiced their continued opposition to the plan. the Jaintia Students Union, the United Hynniewtrep Movement-Khliehriat Circle (UHM-KC) and the Rural & Urban Development Society, East Jaintia Hills District has already released their statement of opposition and determination to block the process.
It must be recalled that huge public opposition last September 2019 has disabled the public hearing to take place. People’s opposition is based on serious environmental concerns including wildlife and water bodies. If the government is really determined to carry out the process, it will be seen that the public will also strengthen their fight against it.
The M/s Star Cement Meghalaya Ltd plans to extend mining areas of limestone and slate at Brishynot, East Jaintia Hill District spanning over 42.051 hectares of land. But to do this, it must first win in the public hearing.
