Joannes JTL Lamare,
The Election to the lone Rajya Sabha Seat from Meghalaya is scheduled for the 26th of March 2020. There are many aspirants and capable people from the State of Meghalaya who I feel should be given the chance to be the voice for Meghalaya in the Upper House of Parliament. Various political parties of Meghalaya should cut across party lines and forget the political differences and come together to choose a consensus candidate.
However, sad to say that this is not the case in the present scenario. NPP President WR Kharlukhi though had initially expressed his unwillingness to accept the nomination, yet now he had shown to the world that he is nothing but a mere “TURNCOAT”. Moreover, what is the contribution of this man to the people of the state so far that he had to be offered with the candidacy, except that he had surrendered his loyalty to a certain political party as its String Puppet.
When the State of Meghalaya is being given with just one Seat in the Upper House of Parliament, the MLAs who will be electing the lone member should be wise on this ground. They do not have to stick to the direction of the Party’s whip if they feel that the nominee is not up to their expectations. If anyone questions me on this, I have a straight answer – “If Agatha Sangma can vote in the Lok Sabha for CAB declaring that she supports the Bill and NPP stating that it is a party against CAB which had now become CAA, then why can’t any of the MLAs who will elect the Rajya Sabha MP cross vote?”
Moreover, we have more capable leaders who can become more effective as Rajya Sabha MP, the ones who are more involved with the affairs of the people and the state. As for that matter, we need an independent voice in the Rajya Sabha rather that someone who will be a mere Mouthpiece of a certain political party.
The MLAs now needs to come out of the fear of disciplinary actions by their political Bosses and elect an Independent Voice in Parliament, the one who will speak not on behalf of the party but the one who will speak on behalf of the People of the State.
The Regional Parties needs to be united on this issue and when they will elect a new Representative this time around they should think wisely and choose a person who has more of REGIONALISM within him. We are a microscopic people and REGIONALISM should come in the topmost priority. We need a voice of Regionalism in the Parliament and not a voice of and for a certain party.
Baring this in mind, the MLAs should be broad minded and also be gutsy and also take the example of Mitt Romney, A US Senator, who voted against Donald John Trump when he feels that what he had done is for the Best of the Nation and the Race. I am throwing a challenge to those who thinks that the stake of the people is higher and stronger than Parties’ Whip.
