Shillong: Shri W Anthony, Convener of SOMALA and Co Convener of KKNMS, has questioned on the decision of the Directorate of Commerce & Industries Department, that the industrial areas owned by the Government of Meghalaya, do not fall under the jurisdiction of the Autonomous District Councils or Traditional bodies.
In a statement issued today, Mr Anthony said “The question arises whether the Directorate of Commerce & Industries can create an Industrial Estate independent of the Revenue department. The Revenue Department is supposed to safeguard and protect the Tribal land which is a customary possession of the tribal people which cannot be alienated to the non tribal in the shape of industrial estate”.
SOMALA, also feels that the Government in the Revenue Department should look after the land of the people of Meghalaya that it is preserved to the fullest extent and is also supposed to administer the state in accordance with the custom and tradition, which are the objective of the Sixth Scheduled. “The land is customary right of the people in which the state Government cannot distribute the land to institution like Industrial Estate, etc on its own accord which is unconstitutional” the statement added.
It may be recalled that the Directorate of Commerce and Industries, on the 29th May 2019, has issued a notification, which claims that Industrial areas, owned by the State Government, do not fall under the jurisdiction of the District Council or the traditional bodies.
