Shillong: Young local artist, Bateithymmai Nongrum from Bynther village is such a talented and rising star. Groomed by Dilip Dutta she will pair up with Bollywood famous Artist Kumar Sanu to sing for the upcoming Bollywood film.
Rupang through bah RM Shabong Editor delved more into knowing her in an interview at her Bynther residence.
RMS: Sister Bateithymmai it is a great privilege to be able to talk to you. Can you tell how do you reach to this stage?
Batei: I am thankful to God for what I achieved. There is always a beginning so I first started associating myself with Yes I Am show. Seeing my budding talent, its members showed me the way so I joined Vocal training. I realized the value and necessity of a formal training to shine any talent within.
With God’s guidance I met Dilip Dutta, the director who inspire me with his professionalism.
RMS: as an artist what does it feel like to be singing in Bollywood?
Batei: Yes, it is not easy. Sir Dilip Dutta right from the first meeting at Mumbai told me, “Batei! To be an artist in Bollywood is not an ordinary step. One must work hard and train intensely. Even the likes of famous artists such as, Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan and others did not become professional overnight. One has to be good at pronunciation as well.” There are many steps to climb before one gets to Bollywood.
The song I will be singing is called Rat Te Rangi. At first, what I am thinking was that this will be for the Album but I was amazed when Sir informed he will introduce in Bollywood. I am elated. I thank God for it. My parents encouraged me throughout, I am indebted to them.
RMS: So far, none from among Khasi artists enter Bollywood. You are the first. It is such an achievement and a great honour. However, what about the cost! Can you earn something by entering into Bollywood?
Batei: indeed I expect to earn for a living through this and perhaps it will be my career because I work so hard for it. However, it is always my conviction that I learn to love and respect my own local language first. Indeed, I used to sing in my own language country songs and devotional songs.
RMS: How does it feel to be singing together with professionals like Kumar Sanu and others?
Batei: Initially when I went to Mumbai I did not expect to be singing with Kumar Sanu. I went there for my Vocal training so that when I return to Shillong I can teach others as well. To my surprise, Sir told me, “Batei I will give you the chance to sing with Kumar Sanu.” “You must be kidding me” I replied. But he insists that he really meant it. I told my parents over phone about it though I still was not really sure I will be given that chance.
It was until I reached the studio when I also see Kumar Sanu but I was really shocked. It is really true that I could sing with him. I help him sing in Khasi but it seems so hard for him. Thus, I had to sing the Khasi part and he the Hindi.
RMS: when will this song from the film Dab Dabbatu will be released?
Batei: Next year.
