Shillong: More and more groups get emboldened to come out in the open and oppose mining expansion plan of Star Cement Ltd.
The Seng Samla Shnong Umkiang (SSSU) is another group or society which join the line of opposition to the plan.
SSU asserts that within 1997- 2002 no sign of negative impact of mining is seen. It was since 2005 the year of Cement factories in the area that the effect was beginning to be felt by people and water bodies especially in villages like Sonapur, Chymplong Borsara, Kuliang, and Umkiang where large number of their population earn their livelihood through fishing activities. Ever since the change of the river colour and deaths of fishes the people’s miseries began and is unending.
this environmental hazards and negative impact on people’s livelihood are the strong reasons that the SSU cites in its opposition to Star Cement’s expansion plan.
