Star Cement plans to mine 42 hectares of Jaintia’s Earth 1

Jowai: In the past few weeks opposition grows to the Cement Factory’s plan to enlarge its limestone quarry not in square area, not in acre but hectares. The opposition was due to concern over environment hazards.


But mighty Star show off its gravitational force when it could silence critics and surface the not much heard before NGOs in its support. This must raise concern among earth lovers’ minds who feels defeated even before the fight starts.

Star Cement will mine 42 hectares quarry at Brishyrnot, Lumshnong with the unconditional support of many Jaintia NGOs sent to Member Secretary ka Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board. The NGOs are, 19 in numbers comprising Youth and Unemployment Organisation, West Jaintia Hills, Jowai Citizenship Association, Poor People Conference Organisation, Jaintia Hills, Khasi Jaintia Farmers Association, Umphyrnai, East Khasi Hills, The Dorbar Shnong Bamkamar, WJH, Thadlaskein Sub area Marketting Society, Phra Shnong Association (Mukhla, Ummulong, Wahiajer, Moodymmai and others), Muskut Mookyndur FMC to name a few.

Not just a support but also a character certificate. North East India Environment Association, Jaintia Hills Branch give a character certificate about the good work of the Factory to Member Secretary MSPCB. Land and Forest owner Association, East Jaintia Hills is another to shower praise on the Factory. Labour Union West East Jaintia Hills, Transporters Associations and Cements dealers Association East Khasi Hills, Ribhoi bad Jaintia Hills follow suit.
