Jowai: Hundreds of local residents from various village under Narpuh Elaka – a home to many as eight Cement plants in East Jaintia came forward to protest the public hearing slated to day (Saturday) for the proposed limestone mining of the Star Cement at its 40 hactare of land situated at Bri-Chyr-not village.
The local residents blocked the road which lead to the venue and officials of the Meghalaya State Pullution Board and also the East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner who supposed to chair the public hearing were not allowed to go to the venue.
DAYA lamare- a local youth who led the protest informed that the three major river including the Lukha, the Lunar have been badly affected by the Cement plants. The Lukha has been in the news for changing its colour to blue killing thousands of fishes in 2007.
The local were also supports by the Khasi Students Union, the Jaintia Students Union, the JSU and many others.
However the local from Brichyrnot village has supported the Star Cements along with many others NGOs but as the locals have strongly opposed the public hearing to be conducted and as the concerned officials could not reached the sites, the hearing could not be conducted.
