Shillong: The Assembly witnessed many bills being tabled including one related with universities in the state. This is apart from revising pension for MLAs.
Minister education department Shri Lahkmen Rymbui tabled the Meghalaya Private University (Regulation of Establishment and Maintenance of Standard) Bill, 2019. This is in accordance with the order of the Supreme Court of India as a result of the judgement over a file suit by Pro Yashpal versus Chattisgarh government.
The moot point of the bill is regulation of establishment and maintenance of standard of private universities. Private Universities should meet all the requirements required of a university especially those concerning the facilities to create conducive learning atmosphere for students in various departments. As of now, there are eight private universities in total in Meghalaya namely, Mahatma Gandhi University (Amendment) Bill, 2019, The University Of Science and Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2019, CMJ University, (Amendment) Bill, 2019, Maharashtra Institute of Technology University of Meghalaya (Amendment) Bill, 2019, The Techno Global University (Amendment) Bill, 2019, Martin Luther Christian University (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and The William Carey University (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
Meanwhile, Deputy Prestone Tynsong tabled in the house the bill to revise the pension benefits for the MLAs of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya (Members’ Pensions) (Amendment) Bill 2019, as well as the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya (members Salaries & Allowances) (Amendment) Bill 2019.
