Shillong:The United Progressive Front (UPF) is more than ready to take the Speaker post of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly which is left vacant by the untimely demise of Late Shri Dr. Donkupar Roy of the UDP a partner party in the current MDA Government. This was expressed by Mr. Lambor Malngiang, the UDF Leader yesterday. At the same time he reiterated the point that the Speaker post is and will remain a unanimous decision of the MDA government.
It may be mentioned that ever since the demise of the sitting Speaker, UDP the MDA partner, also a party whose candidate held the post is of a strong view that the party retain the post and someone from the party will replace it. However, the Chief Minister and Deputy Minister differed on this. They are of the opinion that late Dr. Donkupar Roy was elected Speaker not on the basis of party affiliation but on being the most eligible due to his long experience in the Assembly and also his calibre. Thus, now the candidature to the post should be a result of consultation and unanimous decision of the MDA government as a whole. Mr. Lambor Malngiang told reporters that the government will soon meet to discuss on this.
It is apparent now that this will become a contentious issue potential to cause rift in the government.
