Nongstoiñ: Yesterday at around 1:15 PM Assam Police returned to Umwali but this time with military cover from the 11 Gorkha Regiment apart from CRPF. It is such a war-like situation.
This action from Assam shocked the West Khasi Hills District Administration, Police and the people. The act has drawn strong condemnation from the people.
However, the approach to the situation from Meghalaya side is to be applauded. It is not provocative but diplomatic. They could bring the Assam side to acknowledge and recognize the dispute status of Langpih which has been maintained by both sides. No side could carry out any activity that will arbitrate this status. Meghalaya assure the Assam side that the presence of police is only temporary for the purpose of ensuring the safety of the villagers from any intimidating actions as it has happened in the recent past (19th February, 2020) as also seen in video clips.
Thus, Meghalaya police under the leadership of SDPO Mawshynrut bah I. Kharkongor along with the Circle Inspector Nongstoiñ bah D. Mawleiñ, Goalon Sangma OC of Langpih and the S-F- 10 could bring the matter under control. Both sides will have to maintain status quo till legal settlement is achieved.
